Who We Help

Wherever You Are in Your Disc Journey

Disc patients come to us at every stage — the right starting point is the same regardless: understanding exactly what’s going on and what your real options are.

Newly Diagnosed

You Just Got the MRI Results

Your doctor mentioned a herniated, bulging, or slipped disc and you’re trying to figure out what it actually means — and what to do next. Most disc cases respond well to conservative care when addressed early. We start with a complete evaluation so you understand exactly what you’re dealing with.

Tried Everything

Medication, PT, and Injections Haven’t Worked

You’ve been managing this for months or years. You’ve done physical therapy. You’ve tried muscle relaxers and anti-inflammatories. Maybe one or more rounds of cortisone shots. The pain keeps coming back — because the underlying spinal and nervous system dysfunction was never addressed. We address it directly.

Considering Surgery

You Want to Exhaust Every Option First

You’ve been told surgery is on the table — or it’s the next step if conservative care doesn’t work. Many of our patients come to us specifically to avoid going under the knife. We’re honest about what we see: if your case genuinely needs surgical evaluation, we’ll tell you. If it doesn’t, we have a path forward.

Gentle, instrument-based chiropractic adjustment for a herniated disc patient at Restoration Chiropractic in Prosper, TX

Neurologically-Based Chiropractic

Gentle Adjustments That Don’t Aggravate the Disc

Disc problems require a careful approach. High-velocity, manual adjustments — the kind that involve heavy twisting and cracking — aren’t appropriate for every disc patient. That’s exactly why we use the Torque Release Technique.

TRT is a gentle, instrument-based adjustment that delivers precise input exactly where dysfunction is happening — without twisting, cracking, or heavy force. Combined with on-site digital X-rays and NASA-certified nervous system scanning, we identify exactly where the disc issue is, what nerves it’s affecting, and how to address it without aggravating the problem.

About Our Technique

Understanding Your Diagnosis

Herniated, Bulging, Slipped, Degenerative —
What’s the Difference?

These terms get used interchangeably, but they describe different stages and types of disc dysfunction. We treat all of them.

Herniated Disc

The Inner Disc Material Has Pushed Through

A herniated disc occurs when the soft, gel-like inner core of a spinal disc pushes through a tear in the tougher outer layer. When that material presses on a nearby nerve, it produces the classic symptoms: localized back or neck pain, plus radiating pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness down the arm or leg.

Most common in: the lumbar spine (lower back, often L4–L5 or L5–S1) and the cervical spine (neck).

Bulging Disc

The Disc Has Pushed Outward, but the Outer Layer Is Intact

A bulging disc is the earlier-stage cousin of a herniated disc. The disc has flattened and pushed outward beyond its normal boundary, but the outer fibrous layer hasn’t torn. Bulging discs may or may not cause symptoms — many are found incidentally on MRI — but when they impinge on a nerve, they can produce pain similar to a herniation.

Why it matters: a bulging disc is often a warning sign that, without intervention, can progress to herniation.

Slipped Disc

A General Term for Disc Displacement

“Slipped disc” isn’t a precise medical term — it’s a casual way of describing either a bulging or herniated disc. Discs don’t actually slip out of place, but the language reflects what it can feel like: sudden, sharp pain, often after lifting or twisting, with the sense that something “went wrong” in the spine.

What we look for: the same things we’d look for with a confirmed herniation or bulge — alignment, nerve involvement, and compensation patterns.

Degenerative Disc Disease

Wear and Tear on the Discs Over Time

Despite the name, degenerative disc disease isn’t really a disease — it’s the gradual breakdown of disc tissue that happens with age, repetitive load, or old injuries. Discs lose hydration, thin out, and become less effective shock absorbers, leading to chronic stiffness and pain that often comes and goes.

How we help: we can’t reverse aging, but we can address the misalignment and compensation patterns that make symptoms worse, slowing the cycle and restoring function.

Out of Pain in 1 Week

"I was recommended to Restoration by a neighbor after suffering a herniated disc. I was in extreme pain and even walking was excruciating. After just one week, I was out of pain and Dr. Jake has helped my back make a full recovery. I have been under chiropractic care my whole life but the method used at Restoration is by far the most effective I have ever experienced. My whole family now sees him."

Chronic L3 Herniation

"I had been suffering from chronic lower back pain due to a herniated disc at L3. I decided to try chiropractic care — I’m so glad I did. The chiropractor used gentle adjustments and targeted therapies to relieve the pressure on my spine. After a few weeks of regular sessions, my pain significantly reduced, and I regained my mobility."

Degenerative Disc

"I came in initially for sciatica. I had had 2 rounds of cortisone shots and I did not want that anymore. After just 4 visits, Dr. Jake had my sciatica completely healed and it has stayed that way. I now go weekly to be adjusted for scoliosis, degenerative disc, and other issues. By faithfully coming for my spinal adjustments, Dr. Jake and the team have been able to stabilize all those health issues."

Shockwave therapy for chronic disc-related muscle and soft tissue dysfunction at Restoration Chiropractic in Prosper, TX

Shockwave Therapy

For the Soft-Tissue Damage Disc Problems Leave Behind

When a disc has been compromised for any length of time, the surrounding muscles and soft tissues take on compensating load — leading to chronic tightness, scar tissue, and persistent pain that adjustments alone don’t fully reach.

Shockwave Therapy targets exactly that. Delivered using the PiezoWave device, it uses precisely-targeted acoustic waves to break up adhesions, reduce inflammation, and stimulate healing in the soft tissues around the affected disc. Non-invasive, drug-free, FDA-registered, and pairs powerfully with chiropractic care for stubborn disc-related cases.

Common Questions

Answers About Herniated Disc Treatment

Can a chiropractor help a herniated disc?
Yes — and in many cases, chiropractic care is one of the most effective non-surgical options available. A herniated disc creates inflammation, nerve irritation, and compensation patterns that gentle, properly-applied chiropractic adjustments are specifically designed to address. Our doctors use the Torque Release Technique, an instrument-based adjustment that delivers precise input without twisting, cracking, or heavy force — making it appropriate even for sensitive disc cases.
Can a chiropractor make a herniated disc worse?
This is a fair concern, and the honest answer is: only if the wrong technique is used on the wrong patient. High-velocity, manual adjustments aren’t appropriate for every disc patient. That’s exactly why we use the Torque Release Technique — it’s gentle, low-force, and instrument-based, with no twisting or heavy thrusting. Combined with on-site digital X-rays before any treatment begins, we know exactly what we’re working with before we adjust.
Is chiropractic care safe for a bulging or slipped disc?
Yes. Bulging discs, slipped discs, and herniated discs are all on the same spectrum of disc dysfunction — and our gentle, neurologically-based approach is appropriate for all of them. The evaluation process is the same: we identify exactly where the disc issue is, assess nervous system function, and build a care plan around it.
Do I need surgery for a herniated disc?
In most cases, no. Surgery is a real option for severe, progressive cases — but the majority of herniated discs improve significantly with conservative care. Many of our patients come to us specifically because they’ve been told surgery is the only option, and want to exhaust non-surgical options first. We’re honest about what we see: if your case is one that genuinely needs surgical evaluation, we’ll tell you.
Will I need an MRI to be treated?
Not necessarily. We perform on-site digital X-rays during your first visit, which give us a clear view of spinal alignment, disc spacing, and any structural issues contributing to your pain. If we believe an MRI is necessary based on what we find — for example, if symptoms suggest significant nerve compression — we’ll refer you out for one before proceeding. If you already have an MRI, bring it with you.
How quickly will I feel relief from a herniated disc?
It varies by case, but many patients notice improvement within the first 1–2 weeks of consistent care, especially if the disc issue is recent. More established disc problems typically take longer — most patients see meaningful improvement over 4–8 weeks of consistent care, with continued progress beyond that. Your doctor’s report after your first visit will give you a realistic timeline based on what we find.
Is chiropractic care safe if my disc injury came from a car accident?
Yes — and post-injury disc cases are among the most important to address early. Disc injuries from auto accidents, falls, or workplace incidents often worsen if left untreated as compensation patterns set in. Our gentle, instrument-based technique is specifically appropriate for post-injury patients. Visit our Personal & Auto Injury page for more detail.
Do I need a referral or insurance to come in?
No. You don’t need a referral, and we work with patients regardless of insurance status. Your first visit includes a full evaluation, on-site digital X-rays, NASA-certified nervous system scan, doctor’s report, and first treatment — all transparent, all explained upfront.
