The most precise, low-force chiropractic technique available — delivered through a specialized adjusting instrument that eliminates twisting, cracking, and popping.
What Is TRT?
Torque Release Technique (TRT) is a neurologically-based chiropractic method that uses a specialized hand-held adjusting instrument — called the Integrator — to deliver precise, targeted corrections to the spine. Unlike traditional chiropractic, there’s no twisting, cracking, or popping involved.
Instead, the Integrator delivers a quick, controlled impulse to a specific point on the spine at approximately 1/10,000th of a second — faster than the body can tense up in response. The result is a gentle, reproducible adjustment that’s safe and comfortable for every member of the family, from newborns to seniors.
At Restoration Chiropractic, all of our doctors are Advanced Proficiency Certified in TRT, and we use it as our primary adjusting technique. When a case calls for it, we still use skilled manual adjustments — sometimes in combination with TRT — to give each patient the most effective care.
TRT vs Traditional Chiropractic
Both approaches have a place in chiropractic care. Here’s how they compare across the factors patients ask about most.
Our team uses TRT as the primary technique because of its precision and gentleness. When a patient’s case calls for manual adjustments, we provide those too — often in combination. The goal is the best outcome, not a single method.
Who TRT Is For
Because TRT is low-force and highly specific, it’s safe and effective for a wide range of patients — including those who’ve historically been hesitant about chiropractic care.
No twisting or pressure on the abdomen. TRT is widely used alongside Webster Technique throughout pregnancy for comfort and nervous-system support.
The Integrator’s force is adjustable down to levels appropriate for newborns. Our ICPA-trained doctors use TRT on kids at every stage of development.
Low-force adjustments are safer for patients with osteoporosis, arthritis, or reduced bone density — letting older patients receive consistent care without concern.
Precise, reproducible adjustments support recovery, performance, and nervous system function — critical for athletes at every level.
If you’ve always been uncomfortable with the idea of manual manipulation, TRT gives you the benefits of chiropractic care without the sensations you’ve been avoiding.
If traditional chiropractic hasn’t worked for you, TRT’s precision and scan-based targeting often reaches problems that manual adjustments miss.
The Instrument
The Integrator is the hand-held adjusting instrument developed specifically for Torque Release Technique. It was the first chiropractic instrument developed through a randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial — designed at the University of Miami School of Medicine in partnership with the Holder Research Institute.
When your doctor identifies a point on your spine that needs adjustment, they place the Integrator on that specific location. The instrument automatically releases a precise, measured impulse the moment the right contact pressure is reached — so the adjustment is the same every time, regardless of which doctor delivers it.
Benefits
The combination of precision, gentleness, and consistency creates a patient experience that’s fundamentally different from what most people expect from chiropractic care.
No twisting or popping. The Integrator’s controlled impulse is delivered so quickly that patients often describe it as a light tap.
Force levels adjust from newborn-appropriate to adult-grade. Webster Certified and ICPA-trained doctors use TRT on pregnant moms, infants, kids, and seniors every day.
The Integrator targets exact spinal segments. Combined with our neurological scanning, we adjust only what needs to be adjusted — nothing more.
TRT is a neurologically-based technique designed to reduce interference in the nervous system, supporting the body’s natural ability to self-regulate and heal.
Every adjustment delivers the same precise force. That means consistent results from visit to visit — and the same experience whether your regular doctor is in or a colleague covers your appointment.
Many patients report steady improvement over weeks of care as the nervous system recalibrates. TRT supports long-term wellness, not just short-term pain relief.
Research & Development
Unlike most chiropractic techniques that evolved through clinical experience, Torque Release Technique was developed through structured research — including a randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial.
Holder, J.M. et al. “Increasing Retention Rates Among the Chemically Dependent in Residential Treatment.” Molecular Psychiatry (Nature Publishing Group), Vol. 6, Supplement 1, Feb. 2001.
A randomized, placebo-controlled, single-blind trial comparing TRT adjustments with the Integrator to sham-adjustments and standard care. Designed by Dr. Robert Duncan, biostatistician at the University of Miami School of Medicine. The study established the scientific foundation for both TRT and the Integrator instrument.
The Integrator is registered with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration under 510(k) clearance as a chiropractic adjusting instrument.
Few hand-held chiropractic instruments hold FDA clearance. The Integrator’s registration reflects its reproducibility, consistent force delivery, and the rigor of the clinical research behind it.
Continued peer-reviewed case studies are published in chiropractic and vertebral subluxation research journals, including the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research and the Annals of Vertebral Subluxation Research.
Case studies continue to document TRT outcomes across a range of presentations — from pediatric and prenatal care to adults with chronic musculoskeletal complaints. This active research base continues to refine best practices for the technique.
Chiropractic care, including Torque Release Technique, is not a substitute for diagnosis or treatment of specific medical conditions. The research referenced above describes outcomes observed in studies and case reports; individual results vary. Speak with one of our doctors to determine if TRT is right for you.
Advanced Proficiency Certification is the highest level of training available in Torque Release Technique. It requires completing a full certification program and passing assessments on technique mastery, patient evaluation, and the neurological principles behind TRT. Every chiropractor at Restoration holds this credential.
